Beastly behavior

"We are beasts, and this is our consolation."
What is this supposed to mean? Why would Dorcas be prized as some sort of outrageous feminist when for her sexual gratification -- or profit? -- or art? -- she would be party to drugging and photographing young women?

  1. I'm not sure. I understood the "consolation" to be the honesty of accepting one's beastliness, but I'm not really sure what that means...

Totem poles are very beastly, one animal stacked on another, but they're also very controlled, very upright and tight, and ritualistic. They seem frightful and protective all at once.

  2. I thought, too, it meant that we behave badly and our consolation is to think we are merely beasts, behaving just as we are designed to.

Or possibly it means we are beasts but art is our consolation since it sets us apart as human beings.

Who knows, really. It sounds like some pretentious, artsy way of justifying your behavior.
