Was he meant to be annoying? I can't really figure it out. I felt more at ease with Franny's mental state than with his rapid-fire response to it. As you both note, though, he did have some extraordinary insights as he wore on the nerves.

Oh, I kind of loved him. He reminds me of those people you meet from time to time with no filter -- no social filter, no mental filter -- everything they're thinking just pours out of them spontaneously. You know, it would be different to have seen him interacting with anyone but family, but upbraiding your relatives like that is sort of what one does. Buddy would have been the same way, I think -- instead he just vents it all out through words (and not very concisely, either).
Hehe. Those were probably the times when I began to read faster ... :)
ReplyDeleteIn some ways, he reminded me of a very bitter and twisted college student. He has flashes of insight, though, that are just extraordinary.
