The soul

I thought there were a lot of interesting ideas in "Morel" about what constitutes a soul. Here's what Morel says to his guests: "When all the senses are synchronized, the soul emerges. That was to be expected. When Madeleine existed for the senses of sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch, Madeleine herself was actually there."

  1. Yeah, that was interesting. Almost like your soul really just exists in other people's perceptions.

  2. I think the author meant for us to be skeptical of this claim by Morel. Do you all agree? Was Morel unreliable on this point?

I felt that way because the projections seemed soulless to me. On the other hand, the bodies that sailed away and deteriorated rapidly (that is what happened, isn't it?) also seemed soulless.

  3. Well, I'll go ahead an nit-pick a little. If the projection takes on your soul, what about the period between the time the projection goes live and the time your body dies? Where is your soul -- still in your body or now in the projection? Both places?

  4. If the souls transferred to the projections, then that might explain the strange deterioration in the bodies (do souls keep fingernails intact?).

Or is it possible that the souls split?
