World War I seems to be famous, at least in literature, for being especially savage and disrupting a lot of religious faith (and also faith in humankind). But, yeah, I didn't really grasp how much of Tom's worldview was actually shaped by the war. He and Moon mostly seemed to have that stiff upper lip about it, but it always seemed to be churning below the surface.
Yeah, this was another aspect of Tom that seemed sort of vague. He thought of the war as hell on earth, but it didn't seem to affect his day-to-day life much. He seemed very wrapped up in his current time and place, not spending much thought on the past.
