A little earthier, indeed. Some of the sexual allusions caught me off guard. I expected them to be more veiled. I had to look at the copyright to remind myself that the book was actually published in 1980.
I really enjoyed the story. I sometimes felt that I didn't have a great grasp on the main character, like who he was exactly (and all the stuff with his cheating wife). But I loved the premise and the portrait of village life.
I agree with what you've said. I enjoyed it a lot, too, but it was a little vague about Tom's character and motivations. I also loved the village setting and the idea of uncovering a medieval mural in an old country church.
