Miss Tita

What did you think of Miss Tita's character? I was struck when the narrator said it was "impossible to overestimate her simplicity." Were you surprised that she ultimately destroyed the papers she had been helping the narrator to secure?

  1. I was surprised, yes. But then it also seemed like an act of assertiveness from someone who had up to then been such a passive pawn. As you said in another comment, it seemed like her way of "winning."

I felt sorry for her mostly. She was basically imprisoned in that palazzo, getting pleasure only from rare little novelties like fresh flowers and snippets of conversation. It felt like her life had passed her by and that even when an "opportunity" came along for her to be someone different her lack of experience kept her from knowing how to take advantage of it. It's like in the end she could only be destructive because she didn't have the means or wherewithal to be constructive.
