The people definitely seemed to have a new sense of "what do I do with myself now?" like life had been so regimented and proscribed that "freedom" gave it a kind of amorphous, slightly dangerous quality.
Mostly the people in the book seemed to lack a nationality, though. When there was a reference to Poland or a Polish word, I paused to think, "oh yeah, this takes place in Poland."
